How To Start A Blog | 10 Steps!

Wanna start a blog? Yes? You’ve come to the right place!

Ever since I started a blog, A LOT of people have been asking me how to start one and how I do certain things within social media, Pinterest, and marketing.

So, I decided why not create a little blogging series on starting your blog, creating social media handles, and sharing other marketing tools and ideas that I use.

When I finally decided I 100% wanted to create a blog and go the whole nine, I searched through Pinterest for ideas, help, and other guides. I took ideas and key information from all guides and started doing things my own way. From there, I created ten steps that easily helped me set everything up.

My ten steps are

  1. Figure out why you want to start a blog
  2. Figure out your niche
  3. Choose your blog name and register the domain
  4. Purchase web hosting
  5. Decide on a platform (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix…)
  6. Choose a theme
  7. Come up with blog post ideas
  8. Set up social media accounts
  9. Market/Gather Audience
  10. Write your first blog post!

With these ten steps, you are on the right way to the blogging world! Lets get into it!

Figure Out Why YOU Want to Blog

I started blogging because I’ve been reading blogs and watching Youtube since I was in middle school and just love it and always wanted to have my own platform to share my thoughts. Also, as a journalism major, it’s a good way to get yourself and name out into the world.

So, you need to have a reason otherwise, you won’t feel motivated to blog daily and it will just go to waste. So, what is the reason you want to start one? To share your thoughts/advice? Share cooking tips and recipes? Fashion outfits and makeup tips? Whatever you want to bring to the world, bring it and be 100% sure about it.

Figure out Your Niche

A niche is your topic. My blog’s topic is fashion and lifestyle. But, as we know, those are broad topics so you have to narrow it down. Within fashion, I like to post outfits, outfit ideas, and lookbooks etc.. For lifestyle, I like talking about my life, and sharing tips about hair and beauty. So, you need to do the same. Pick something that you’re passionate about and that you can definitely make a ton of posts from.

With whatever you choose, make sure you have sub-branches for it. For example, if you’re niche is cooking, have more to bring to the table rather than only sharing what you cooked that day. Make it more of a blog where you share what you’ve cooked, recipes, guides, testing certain foods/items etc. You can do a lot with any topic.

Choose your Blog Name and Register the Domain

This is SUPER important because your blog name is your brand’s name! So, you want something that is going to be eye-catching and showcase what you’re all about. Since my blog is personal and about my fashion and life, I named it after myself; Sjkaine. S and J for my first and middle names and Kaine; my last name.

Think of something cool, that relates to the topic of your blog. If its video games, maybe add your name with the world player or gamer or, you could use a cool subtle name from one of your favorite games that only true gamers will understand. That will definitely bring readers to your blog.

Once you have picked a name, register your domain so this name can be yours and yours only. Also so it can be an actual __.com instead of (for example) __.wordpress.com because its more professional as ___.com.

Purchase Web Hosting

Having web hosting is so important because this is what keeps your blog running. Its how your blog gets backed up and all the other technical aspects that go into the security of your site and work.

I personally use Bluehost and its amazing. It is affordable and they do all the work for you. .They also post articles, tips and tricks that help you learn more about their services and teach you more information that you can be doing for your site. You can read up more information on their site!

Decide on a Platform

The platform you choose is important because that’s where your blog is going to be. You want one that is going to be simple in setting up, use and has great customer service if needed.

I may be biased but I personally think WordPress is the best. I haven’t had any problems with it and they do a great job with helping you in the technical and logistical field.

Also, if you decide on WordPress, use WordPress.ORG because, .COM isn’t as personal. If you want to take your blog in the career direction, .ORG is for you. It allows you to self host, monetize and be the owner of your work.

Choose a Theme

Choosing a theme is another key essential in creating your blog because you want something that looks nice and will attract people to your site. If your page looks messy and unorganized, most people aren’t going to want to read your posts.

The colors and designs you choose are also important and should relate to your blog’s theme. Don’t just pick colors you think look nice – pick ones that match your niche!

WordPress has some amazing free and price ones as well as Pipdig, Theme forest and Envato Market. Also, don’t be afraid to invest into your site. If you need to, pay for a good theme that comes with cool widgets and aspects.

Come up with Blog Post Ideas

Writer’s block can occur in whatever you do so I suggest writing every single idea you have down. I personally have a journal with ideas written down related to fashion and lifestyle posts, that I refrence every time I begin writing.

Set up Social Media Accounts

Social Media is obviously the most important factor in gaining subscribers and followers because without it, you’d be writing to yourself. My advice is; sign up on EVERY popular social media site because each one does something different in aiding you.

Plus, each platform will allow you to follow other bloggers and Youtubers and engage with them. Engaging with people is one of the most important things to do in this industry.

Market/Gather Audience

Once you set up your accounts, start advertising your blog. The best way is to make posts on your accounts or your stories, with links to your blog or certain posts.

Also, use Pinterest. Pinterest is one of the best tools to drive traffic to your blog and profile. You can easily pin different articles and photos from your site and make the Pins eye-catching by using apps such as Canva and Wordswag to create amazing graphics.

Write Your First Blog Post

Lastly, GET STARTED! Write your first blog post and publish it! Or create a schedule and start writing up a storm and publish them when you’re ready.

One thing to remember, blog writing is different than essay writing. You should obviously write properly but keep it conversational. Your readers will be more interested if you wrtie like you’re speaking.

That is it! Those are my personal ten steps on how you can start a blog from scratch!

Remember these steps and you’ll be on your way to creating an amazing blog!
